Bedroom/Nursery/Bathroom
Begin packing your bedrooms by handling less-used rooms first. Children can help by setting aside toys and books they want to take with them and then packing the rest in boxes. Colorful stickers on the outside of moving boxes can let children know their personal belongings are clearly marked, and will allow them to identify things when the moving van is unloaded.
Clothing
Clothing which is hanging in closets on hangers can be placed in wardrobe cartons. You may consider purchasing several of these special moving cartons from your moving company. One will hold about two feet of compressed clothing on hangers.
Hats
Hats may be left in hatboxes and placed in large cartons for moving; or stuff the crown of each hat with crumpled tissue paper, wrap tissue loosely around the outside and place in carton lined with clean paper, with heavier hats at the bottom. Label the carton as "Fragile."
Jewelry
Valuable jewelry should never be packed with your household goods. They will be most secure in your possession during the move. Consider hiring a third-party armored vehicle service if you don't feel comfortable taking your valuables with you.
Toiletries
Dispose of your aerosol spray cans, or take them with you. Other bottles should be carefully taped shut and wrapped to prevent leakage, then packed in small cartons. See our list of Items That Cannot Be Shipped.
Bedding, Linens, and Towels
Blankets, tablecloths, sheets, pillowcases and other linens may be protected by a large plastic bag and packed in a moving carton that has been lined with clean paper.
- Linens and bedding are excellent for cushioning or padding other items.
- Wrap the most valuable items in tissue.
- Make sure items are dry if washed prior to move.
Mattresses & Pillows
Place your mattresses in moving cartons for added strength and cleanliness. Pillows can be placed in bureau drawers or packed in cartons.
Mirrors
Glass mirrors should be packed in special mirror cartons for moving. However, if they are heavy, crating is recommended. Ask your Relocation Consultant about crating services.
Draperies & Curtains
Wardrobe cartons are perfect for moving drapes and curtains. Fold them lengthwise and place them over a padded hanger, pin and hang in wardrobe.
Rugs
Leave rugs on the floor for the moving companies to handle.
